Tips for Writing to Your Legislator

When writing to your legislators, consider the following guidelines:

  • Focus on one issue per letter.
  • Keep your letter concise (one page is preferable).
  • Make sure your facts are accurate and credible.
  • Make the letter thoughtful and personal. Describe to your representative why/how an issue is important to you.
  • Be respectful and courteous. Avoid sounding insincere by using an excessive amount of flattery. Conversely, avoid sounding abrasive by sounding accusatory or angry.
  • Your letters should be neatly written (either type your letter or write legibly).
  • Tell your legislator how you think they should vote on the issue.
  • Make sure your full address with zip code is included.
  • If possible, send your letter on your institution’s letterhead.
  • Ask a question in your letter to help ensure a response.
