LEOFF I COALITION RESOLUTION
2011-2012

WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Board of the LEOFF I COALITION to recognize issues and state its position pertaining to the LEOFF I Retirement System; and

WHEREAS, The official position of the LEOFF I Coalition is that, all assets, interests and any other trust funds may be for the exclusive use for LEOFF I beneficiaries; and

WHEREAS, The official position of the LEOFF I Coalition is that, LEOFF I members were told the LEOFF I Retirement System is fully funded by the government at this time; and

WHEREAS, The official position of the LEOFF I Coalition is that, more recently, LEOFF I pension money is said to have a level of one billion dollars, which brought a “merger” attempt to combine the LEOFF I and LEOFF 2 pensions. An actuary method to claim we have a “surplus” was used instead of market value to justify a money grab; and

WHEREAS, The official position of the LEOFF I Coalition is that, when the last LEOFF I beneficiary passes away, the remaining pension money (if any) goes back to the State, and if the LEOFF I pension fund runs out before the last LEOFF I beneficiary passes away, the State is responsible for funding the pension for the remainder of that beneficiary’s life; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, The LEOFF I Coalition opposes any legislation merging the LEOFF I and LEOFF 2 Pension funds and any legislation that diminishes or terminates the LEOFF I Law, and the LEOFF I Coalition will take whatever steps necessary to prevent this; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The LEOFF I Coalition seeks representation and input on the “merger study” of the LEOFF I Retirement System and the LEOFF 2 Retirement System being reviewed by the State Office of Financial Management, as well as the Office of the State Actuary and the LEOFF 2 Board.
