Tips for Writing to Your Legislator
When writing to your legislators, consider the following guidelines:
- Focus on one issue per letter.
- Keep your letter concise (one page is preferable).
- Make sure your facts are accurate and credible.
- Make the letter thoughtful and personal. Describe to your representative why/how an issue is important to you.
- Be respectful and courteous. Avoid sounding insincere by using an excessive amount of flattery. Conversely, avoid sounding abrasive by sounding accusatory or angry.
- Your letters should be neatly written (either type your letter or write legibly).
- Tell your legislator how you think they should vote on the issue.
- Make sure your full address with zip code is included.
- If possible, send your letter on your institution’s letterhead.
- Ask a question in your letter to help ensure a response.
